The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 2,030 bags of smuggled rice, 167 used tyres, and other contraband goods.

The command’s Area Controller, Comptroller Joseph Adelaja, disclosed this on Monday in Ibadan while briefing newsmen on the command’s achievements over the past 17 days.

Adelaja listed other seized items, including 28 bales of used clothes, 167 kegs of petrol (25 liters each), 660 kg of cannabis sativa, and 28 used refrigerator compressors.

“Others are three vehicles used for smuggling, and one bale of used shoes.”

According to him, the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized goods is about N468.7 million.

Adelaja, who warned smugglers against illegal activities,  said smuggling was detrimental to Nigeria’s economic growth.

“The Oyo/Osun Command will leave no stone unturned in ensuring strict compliance with Customs laws.

“I assure the public that the officers and men of the Oyo/Osun Area Command remain resolute in the fight against smuggling and illicit trade and will not relent in our efforts to curb these unlawful activities,” he said.

Adelaja revealed that the smuggled foreign rice was concealed in three heavy-duty trucks.

He further explained that smuggling not only undermined national economic development but also posed serious risks to public safety and well-being.

While calling for public cooperation, he urged stakeholders to support the customs service in its fight against smuggling and other illegal activities.

“The support and cooperation of the public will enhance our ability to effectively carry out our duties in safeguarding the nation’s economy,” he added.

Adelaja also expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, and his management team for their unwavering support and commended officers and men of the command for their dedication and commitment to duty.
