The Port Consultative Council (PCC) has appealed to all freight forwarding associations in the country to voluntarily amalgamate and speak with one voice in order to achieve success in port operations.

The PCC made the appeal when members of its taskforce led by its Chairman; Alhaji Abayomi Adigun paid a courtesy visit to the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders  (NAGAFF) headquarters in Lagos.

Speaking at the visit, Alhaji Adigun said that the standard of freight forwarding practice in Nigeria is low when compared to that of the United Kingdom. He suggested that the amalgamation of all freight forwarding associations will make a difference.

The PCC chieftain said, "As the taskforce chairman of the PCC one of the greatest thing I will do and I pray God make me to do is to bring all the freight forwarders under one institution."

He noted that there is need for freight forwarders to come under one umbrella body in order to have a uniform voice.

The chairman also lamented that the proliferation of associations have not helped in moving the port industry forward pointing out that unity will bring out about efficiency in the industry.

Adigun said that the personalities in an association like NAGAFF can help in the process of ensuring that all associations can speak with voice through amalgamation.

"I enjoined all freight forwarding associations to sit together and decide to come under one umbrella and in fact, if that can be done in our era, we will have course to glorify God", he stated.

He also said that the amalgamation of associations will be the greatest legacy ever achieved in the maritime sector because it will help to promote shipping and port business effectively.

Adigun assured that NAGAFF will be included in the PCC committee.

Responding, National President of NAGAFF, Chief Eugene Nweke said that freight forwarders can achieve more when they speak in unionism.

Nweke explained to the PCC team that the setting up of the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) in 2007 was to bring all freight forwarding associations together.

The NAGAFF boss also noted that training of freight forwarders through the council is in place to sensitize members of associations on ethics of the profession and that the idea of the training is to inculcate professionalism in the freight forwarding practice in Nigeria
