The Port Standing Task Team (PSTT) and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have cautioned dockworkers over carrying sample of goods meant for examination at the terminals for Customs officers and immigration officers working at the terminals.
Speaking on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to MWUN, the National Coordinator of the PSTT, Mr. Moses Fadipe informed that some of the dock workers working at various terminals are being used by government officials at the terminals to carry sample goods homes on their behalf.
Fadipe alleged that government officials go home with sample goods by making use of the dock workers, while stating that in the last two months sample goods seized from government officials has already filled a 20ft container, while urging the dock workers to desist from the illicit practice.
According to him, “in the terminals everyday, government officials go home with samples, these government officials make use of the dock workers to carry the samples, we made a seizure in the last two months and those sample seizures have filled a 20ft container to the brim. So please don’t carry for anyone”.
Sounding a note of warning to the dock workers the President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju told the dock workers that the act of taking sample good for officers has to stop, while directing the branch President to ensure that such practice never occur again.
Adeyanju informed that the union will support the task team while also stating that the MWUN has been transformed and no longer gets involved in hooliganism. He said “the era of turning the port upside down is no longer in our record, MWUN has been transformed; gone are the era hooliganism, and drugs for me and my executives we say no to drugs”.

The PG of MWUN warned that any of its members caught with illicit drugs will cease to be a member of the union and will face the full wrath of the law.
“Any of our members caught with illicit drugs either by accomplice will cease to be our members
“Clean money is better than drug money, we are not in support of drug trafficking and we are sending this signal to NDLEA that there is need for them to partner with us in ensuring the fight against drug trafficking or abuse” he said.
Speaking earlier, the National Coordinator of the PSTT; Moses Fadipe, informed that its activities at the port have helped reduced cargo dwell time at the nation’s ports, this is even as he also informed that before it’s intervention in the industry average container examined in a day was 125 containers. He however said with its intervention it has helped increase it to 185 containers examined per day.
