Private Maritime Academy Set To Upgrade From Mono To Polytechnic

Strong indications have emerged that foremost maritime institution in Nigeria; Stars Maritime Academy may transmute from a Monotechnic to Polytechnic in the nearest future.

Rector of the school; Dr. Reuben Ovai in a chat with Shipping Position daily, recently said that the moves are on- going for the academy to upgrade its status.

Ovai noted that the school was working assiduously to meet the necessary requirements that have been set by the National Board for Technical Education [NBTE] and the Ministry of Education.

The rector maintained that the proposal for the school to transmute to polytechnic was part of strategies to ensure that the academy up its ante in the maritime sector in Nigeria, adding that the process might take a while, before it would be achieved.

He stated that there had been constant interaction and dialogue between the school authority and the respective government agencies in line with the upgrade.

According to him, management of the school has approached both NBTE and the Ministry of Education for approval for the academy to step up from Monotechnic to Polytechnic.

Apparently determined to work towards the directive of attaining a polytechnic status, Dr. Ovai reiterated that the school has what it takes to upgrade, stressing further that it has the facilities and that would make it succeed.

Ovai stated that SMA has already commenced work on extra courses as part of measures to boost its curriculum for better assessment before it could upgrade to Polytechnic.

He however added that the ministry and NBTE had been visiting on regular interval to monitor its activities and facilities.
‘’Let me state that Stars Maritime Academy will soon be upgraded to a Polytechnic because we have what it takes to get to that level’’
‘’Let me state that we are consulting with both NBTE and Ministry of Education, on the move to upgrade from where we are onto the next level’’, he disclosed.
The Rector however admitted that registration for the next voyage was on going on and on interested candidates to show interest in maritime studies.
