The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) had to soft-pedal on the nationwide strike which it threatened to embark upon because of circumstances which bordered on the integrity of the union, Shipping Position Daily has learnt.
The union had put the nation on anxiety following its insistence that it would cripple the economic activities, should the Federal Government fail to pay subsidy arrears being owned petroleum marketers in Nigeria.
Inside sources confirmed to Shipping Position Daily that the allegations made by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala that the union was being sponsored by some entrenched interest and some of the indicted marketers in order to sabotage the Federal Government were actually true and that these allegations had incited the union members into carrying out an insider- investigation of its top officers.
On the strength of the allegations, the union has also shifted ground on its support for the marketers and the subsidy probe and asked the Federal Government to go ahead and probe marketers that are found guilty, but insisted that those that have been cleared of wrong doings should be paid subsidy.
Our source confirmed that some highly- placed members of the union were investigated and found out to have allegedly collected bribes from some petroleum marketers.
The source who is also a top member of NUPENG specifically alleged that the Managing Director of a frontline petroleum importing company (names withheld) Capital Oil and Gas, as the number one culprit who reportedly attempted to use the union in other to divert attention from the billions of Naira  he collected as fuel subsidy from  the federal government.
According to the report that was issued last week by the Minister of Finance, the highest offender among the fraudulent marketers was Capital Oil and Gas Ltd, which was indicted for receiving payment of a whopping N10 billion when the shipping lines listed by the company were not near Nigeria at the time making the claims.
