Rwanda: SDV Transami Opens $2.6 Million ICD

East African Business Week (Kampala) SDV Transami Rwanda Sarl, a clearing and forwarding company has opened a US$2.6million Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Kigali, two years after the liberalization of the sub sector.
The ICD with a capacity of 250 to 300 containers will also handle goods in transit through Rwanda to neighbouring Eastern DR Congo and Burundi.
SDV Transami becomes the pioneer private company licensed by Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) to operate an ICD in Rwanda adding to Magerwa-the state owned bonded warehouse located in Gikondo, Kigali’s Industrial zone.
The total surface of warehouses is 5,917 square meters which has been divided into free warehouses of 5, 210 square meters and bonded warehouses of 770 square meters to which 460 square meters will be added in the second phase of operations early 2009.
Part of SDV Transami East Africa network, with operations in Mombasa, Nairobi, Kampala, Dar es Salaam, Burundi and Eastern DR Congo, this new facility is expected to handle an estimated 40,000 tonnes in the first year of operations.
It also comes to reduce damages and claims demands from clients, improved and fast turnaround for trucks, more competitive transport rates, quick offloading as well as release of goods.
SDV Transami has been operating in Rwanda since 1965 as part of the Balloré Group. The company offers total logistics solution with full range services such as tracking and follows up of cargo from port of discharge up to delivered door as well as appropriate and effective claims management.
It also enjoys customs bonds coverage to the tune of Rwf700million (close to $1.2million) that is well beyond the requirements of RRA and sufficient to cover all imports, exports transit cargo handled by SDV through or in and out of the country.
