The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Seme Area Command said it has launched an investigation into allegations of misconduct by some of its officers, as captured in a viral video showing individuals being maltreated.
In a statement released by Superintendent Hussaini Abdullahi, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Kayode Kolade, condemned the officers’ actions, describing them as unethical and contrary to the values and operational standards of the Service.
“The CAC has ordered the immediate withdrawal and interrogation of the officers involved to facilitate a thorough investigation. Comptroller Kolade assured that decisive disciplinary measures would be taken against any officer found culpable and that the findings of the investigative panel would be made public upon conclusion.
“We express our deepest empathy for the affected individuals and strongly condemn such conduct. The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to upholding its standards and ensuring public trust,” the statement read.
The statement also quoted the Controller as urging stakeholders and the public using the Lagos-Abidjan Corridor to continue their lawful activities, assuring them of the Command’s dedication to maintaining a safe and conducive environment for legitimate trade.
