Shippers’ Council Set to Establish Border Information Centre at Idiroko, Bolster Trade Efficiency

In a strategic move to enhance transparency and streamline trade processes at Nigeria’s land borders, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) is set to establish a Border Information Centre at the Idiroko Border in Ogun State.

The development emerged during a recent working visit by the NSC to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Command at Idiroko, as part of its broader mandate to improve cross-border trade facilitation and inter-agency collaboration.

Leading the delegation was Ms. Adaora Nwonu, Deputy Director of Trade Services, who represented the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Council, Dr. Pius Akutah,. She was received by the Area Controller of Customs at Idiroko Command, Comptroller G. Otunla.

The visit included an inspection of the office space allocated by the Customs Service for the proposed Border Information Centre—an initiative designed to serve as a one-stop hub for trade-related information, enhance compliance, and promote accountability among border stakeholders.

Ms. Nwonu described the Centre as a critical step in fostering regional integration and seamless trade across West African corridors.

“This Centre will not only support the dissemination of timely trade information but also reduce transactional delays and boost trust among border users. The NSC is committed to building structures that empower traders and advance national economic growth,” she said.

In his response, the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Otunla praised the Council’s proactive approach to trade facilitation, noting that closer cooperation between Customs and the NSC will further enhance border efficiency and discourage illicit practices.

“We welcome this initiative and remain open to collaborations that align with our mission to secure Nigeria’s borders while promoting legitimate trade,” he added.

The engagement also provided a platform to discuss broader operational challenges, ethical compliance, and the shared responsibilities of both agencies in addressing trade barriers.

The NSC’s plan to establish a Border Information Centre forms part of its wider strategy to improve Nigeria’s logistics ecosystem and position the country as a competitive player in regional and global commerce.
