An affiliate of the Nigerian Institute of Shipping (NIS); the Shipping College of Nigeria has announced the commencement of the sale of forms and admission into the institute for its 2012/ 2013 academic calendar.
Registrar of the NIS, Mr Sampson Chima while speaking with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week, reiterated that the college was established in 2010 by the NIS to award National Innovative Diploma in Shipping Management.
Chima also reiterated that institute is a professional body that trains certified shipping practitioners and that its programme is licensed by the Federal Government.
He explained that the college has begun admission into its National Innovative Diploma in Shipping Management course and that the curriculum of this course was developed by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 2010.
Speaking further, Chima said that, “the National Innovative Diploma is a certificate just like the National Diploma because before now there are no degree awarding institution that offers shipping management as a course, so the NBTE deemed it fit to develop a curriculum that will cover the shipping management aspect”.
He lamented that, apart from Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), there is no University in Nigeria that offers degree in shipping, according to him, FUTO offers Maritime Management Technology.
Giving more insight into the course, Chima said that it is expected to cover the period of two years and that after this, students who graduate will be issued a National Diploma in Shipping Management.
“The academic calendar will commence by September, but presently we are selling the forms and we are getting prepared to commence classes for the 2012/2013 academic session”, he disclosed.
“The minimum qualification for registration is O’ level, any other degree holders who wish to have a degree in shipping management can also apply”, he stated.
