A Sierra Leone-flagged cargo ship collided with the Russian Navy’s landing ship Yamal in the

Aegean Sea on Dec. 30, 2017, nobody was injured in the accident, Russia’s Black Sea Fleet

spokesman said Wednesday.
Capt. Vyacheslav Trukhachev said On Dec. 30, at about 7 a.m. the Sierra Leone-flagged Orka-II

cargo ship, en route from Egypt to Turkey, collided with the Black Sea Fleet Yamal landing ship, en

route to Sevastopol from the Mediterranean Sea, in the Aegean Sea when passing through the

Karpathos Strait (nine-10 miles south of Rhodes Island).
Trukhachev said no one was hurt as a result of the collision.
He said: “the ships remained afloat and continued along their routes to the destinations.
“The collision was caused by the Sierra Leone-flagged vessel.
“The incident occurred due to the fault of the Orka-2 cargo ship, which, in violation of the

International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG-72), suddenly changed its

course to the right when advancing on a parallel track and overtaking the Russian ship on the port

side, without making sure that the overtaking was completed, and caused the collision.”
Trukhachev noted that Russia had drafted a notarised statement of maritime protest, which

described the circumstances of the incident for subsequent actions to recover the damage caused

by the perpetrator.
