Leading maritime industry stakeholders have called for greater investment in youth capacity building, digital competence, and strategic networking as the future of the maritime industry shifts toward automation and technological transformation.
This was the highlight at the 9th and 2025 edition of the Annual Maritime Students and Youths (AMSAY) Conference which held last week in Lagos. It was organised by Platforms Communications, with the theme, “Automation and Digitalisation of Maritime Operations” which drew maritime students and cadets from different institutions across the country.
During his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and renowned maritime lawyer, Dr. Emeka Akabogu emphasized the critical role of the AMSAY Conference in grooming the next generation of maritime leaders. He noted that while thousands of events take place annually within the maritime space, few directly contribute to the industry’s long-term growth by focusing on capacity development.
Akabogu lauded the conference for serving as a career launchpad for students and young professionals, stating that its thematic focus on automation, safety, and trade modernization addresses operational challenges and future-proofing for the sector. He however stressed the urgency for discipline and focus during such conferences, noting that the sessions are packed with insights capable of reshaping operational frameworks within the industry.
Akabogu further commended the organizers for their consistency over the past nine years, describing the conference as a top-tier event that has consistently delivered value, especially for students seeking a pathway into the maritime profession. “The future of the industry is anchored on the capacity of those that will run it. This event is an important pipeline for facilitating the skills that will anchor the industry going forward,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC) and President of Nigeria Association of Stevedoring Operators (NASO), Mr. Bolaji Sunmola delivered a compelling keynote that examined the transformation of maritime operations through digital innovation. He highlighted the significance of artificial intelligence, blockchain, automated terminals, and smart ports in shaping the future of logistics and cargo handling.
Sunmola emphasized that digital technologies are revolutionizing turnaround times, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance. He outlined practical steps for students to remain competitive, including pursuing certifications in logistics technology, learning about cybersecurity in maritime, and staying updated with global maritime trends.
The NPCC Chairman who was the Father of the Day however called on participants to network with industry leaders, read journals, follow international bodies like the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and remain curious about how digital tools are reshaping global trade. “To stay alive in this fast-changing industry, there is great work to be done. I recommend that you learn beyond your curriculum, engage in internships, and connect with professionals,” Sunmola advised.
Echoing similar sentiments, President of Nigeria Maritime Law Association (NMLA), Mrs Funke Agbor SAN, highlighted the wide scope of opportunities available in the maritime sector, including roles in ports, shipping, and shore-based operations. She praised AMSAY for staying committed to capacity development in maritime law and related fields.
Mrs Agbor also drew attention to automation trends such as unmanned vessels and remote bridge operations, urging the youth to align their ambitions with emerging global realities. According to her, the maritime sector is evolving quickly, and young people must evolve with it by acquiring relevant technical and digital skills.
Mrs Agbor urged students to make the most of platforms like AMSAY by actively engaging with industry professionals. She encouraged participants not to shy away from interacting with successful maritime professionals, noting that personal connections often open doors to training, mentorship, and employment.
Speaking earlier in his welcome address, the convener of AMSAY Conference, Mr. Silvanus Obasi, expressed deep appreciation to all participants and partners for their commitment to shaping the future of the Nigerian maritime industry. He acknowledged the presence of representatives from several maritime agencies, who were at the event to engage students on their respective tech-driven systems and operational frameworks.
Obasi urged the students to actively participate in the panel discussions, paper presentations, and Q&A sessions, assuring them of a rich and enlightening experience. He also congratulated the finalists of the 4th Fola Ojutalayo Annual Maritime Speech-Making Competition and the recipients of the Best Graduated Maritime Students Awards (BEGMASA), particularly the student set to be honored as Nigeria’s overall best maritime graduate.
Prizes and awards were given to the finalist of the 4th Fola Ojutalayo Annual Maritime Speech-Making Competition which includes: Miss Olarenwaju Esther from Obafemi Awolowo University (First Position), Mr Egbetade Anuoluwa from Obafemi Awolowo University (2nd Position) and Mr Akinpelu Oluwaseun Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (3rd Position). Students from other institutions were given awards and rewarded with cash prizes for the exception academic performances.
