Stakeholders Recommend Concrete For Wharf-Apapa Road

Stakeholders from the Federal Ministry of Works, Power and Housing and the Nigerian Ports Authority have recommended the use of concrete pavement to rehabilitate the Wharf-Apapa road, which has been in a deplorable state for some time.
The stakeholders spoke during an inspection tour of the 25-kilometre Ibese-Itori concrete paved road in Yewa, Ogun State, constructed by AG Dangote Construction Nigeria Limited.
The leader of the delegation and General Manager of Western Ports, Chief Michael Ajayi, said it had been observed that concrete roads were more durable than those constructed with bitumen.
Ajayi said the delegation would recommend concrete paving for the Wharf-Apapa road, which has been a source of worry and economic waste to the people and government over the years, as a sustainable means of fixing it once and for all.
He said, “Concrete roads will be a viable alternative for Nigeria in terms of quality and durability, and against the background of the incessant failure of bituminous roads. I will strongly recommend to states to adopt paved concrete for road construction because of its strength and durability. This will save the nation huge resources deployed to unending rehabilitation of roads.
“Particularly when you observed that southern Nigeria has soft top soil and with heavy rain year in year out, the solution to the longevity of our roads lies in the adoption of concrete pavement. We have to give it a trial because it also takes a shorter time to construct.”
Ajayi stated that he was convinced that if the Wharf-Apapa road was constructed with concrete pavement, it would last for a very long time with regular maintenance.
