In line with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) curricula to further boost capacity in the sector, foremost privately owned maritime institution; Stars Maritime Academy (SMA) has disclosed that it will introduce more courses for its students.
Apparently determined to meet the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards, SMA has stressed the need for more courses in order for the students explore other areas that would add value to their programme.
Rector, Stars Maritime Academy; Dr. Reuben Ovai ,in a chat with Shipping Position Daily, last week noted that there is an on-going development in terms of infrastructures in the school and there is need to add more courses to the schools prigramme to empower the cadets.
He said plans are afoot to put more structures on ground before the courses will be introduced officially, adding that it is necessary to put in place modern apparatus to enhance its training modules.
Ovai added that all the new courses are approved by NBTE, pointing out that it is the only way the upgrade and improve on what the institute is doing to impart on the students.
The Rector stressed that "any course that runs in our school is approved by the NBTE and like I said, we will also invite the regulatory body before we start the courses proper ".
He said that some of the new courses may not be maritime-related, saying that there have been concerns in the area of safety and security courses to assist the students.
According to him, courses relating to Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) and ship board courses will be introduced, they will also be of benefit to the students
He said with the introduction of some new courses, there is the need to meet the maritime regulatory agency ; NIMASA for approval.
