Families of 14 Chinese sailors on Friday received over one million Yuan (145,000 dollars) in compensation for each victim of an incident in which a Liberian ship sank a Chinese boat, killing all crew members.
At 2:54 a.m. on July 14, 2015, a Liberian container ship, the FS SANAGA, rammed into a Chinese fishing boat off the coast of east China’s Zhejiang Province.
Meanwhile, instead of reporting the accident immediately, the ship escaped and left the boat to sink and sailors on board to die.
The local maritime department salvaged the sunken ship and conducted an investigation, which concluded that the Liberian ship bore the principal responsibility for the tragedy.
The maritime court in the province’s Ningbo City ordered the foreign company that owned the ship to pay compensation totaling 15.16 million Yuan to the victims’ families in November.
However, both the defendant and plaintiff accepted the verdict.
