The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has ramped up its anti-smuggling operations ahead of the festive season, seizing 15 sacks of Cannabis Sativa worth ₦107.2 million along the Ajido waterways in Lagos.

According to a press statement signed by the command’s spokesman, Magaji Mailafiya noted that the consignment, weighing 538kg, was intercepted on December 16, 2024, by vigilant officers along the Ajido waterways in the Yekeme axis with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦107,205,000.00.

According to the Command, the suspected smugglers abandoned their grounded boat and fled upon sighting the patrol team, leaving behind the illicit items. Despite the challenging environment, the officers successfully secured the contraband and transported it to the Command Headquarters for further examination and investigation.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Command, Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye emphasised the Command’s commitment to securing Nigeria’s waterways during the festive period. He highlighted the enhanced strategies and resources provided by the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) and his management team, which have significantly bolstered the Command’s operational efficiency.

The Command also warned unpatriotic individuals attempting to exploit the Yuletide season for smuggling activities, stating that comprehensive measures are in place to thwart such acts.

The Western Marine Command reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the nation’s waterways and promoting legitimate trade. “Smugglers have no safe haven on our waterways,” the statement read, reaffirming the Nigeria Customs Service’s resolve to maintain a secure environment for lawful economic activities.
