A 19-year-old boat operator, Solomon Olugbenga, was on Thursday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly carrying passengers without giving them life jackets.
The defendant, whose address was not given, is standing trial on a charge of endangering lives of commuters.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godspower Ehizoba, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 28, at 9.00a.m, at National Inland Waterways Authority, Marina, Lagos.
He said that the defendant endangered the lives of occupants of his boat while ferrying them across the waterways without ensuring that they wore life jackets.
The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravened Section 255 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, denied the charge.
The Magistrate, Mrs F. O. Sasanya, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000, with two sureties in like sum.
She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and one of them must be a blood relation of the defendant.
She adjourned the case until May 13 for trial.
