Clearing agents operating from the border station have disclosed that importation of vehicles through the neighbouring port of Cotonou has dropped following dwindling importation into the country.
The agents at Seme border told Auto Port Weekly recently that vehicle clearing has been low, attributing the drop to the Nigerian government policy on automobile.
A freight agent, Samson Adarugbe reiterated that the influx of vehicles from Cotonou port into Nigeria since the beginning of the first quarter has experienced a lull and agents operating from the border have little or nothing to clear.
He said that smuggling of vehicles into the country has been affected as well; following Nigerian importers decline to touch imported used vehicles.
According to him, rice import is the only booming business at the border post.
A member of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) (name withheld) also confirmed the development saying that the first quarter of the year has been poor.
Also confirming the decline of vehicles imported from neighbouring ports, especially Cotonou port,  a fairly used  vehicles dealer at Berger Market; Patrick Ukoli told our correspondent that in recent times, vehicles from neighbouring ports have stopped coming into the market.
He disclosed that some of the vehicles at the park were cleared from the border post, but lamented that there has been a massive drop in the number of such vehicles.
