The Nigeria Customs Service says its International Customs Day scheduled for Thursday will focus on promoting data analysis as a key element of customs’ modelisation process.
Customs Acting Public Relations Officer; Mr Joseph Attah, announced made this in an interview in Abuja.
According to him, Nigeria will join the global customs community on January 26 to celebrate the 2017 international customs day.
He said that it was the practice each year that the World Customs Organisation (WCO) would single out an aspect of the customs’ operations and highlight it to draw global attention.
“The theme for the 2017 celebration is data analysis for effective border management in order to promote data analysis as a key element of customs modelisation process.
“This particular function will help the government of any nation to know where it is and where it needs to be in customs operations.
“It will underscore the need for compliance and to entrench integrity in the process of imports and exports.
“The celebration will bring to the front burner the need for importers to comply and to avoid false declaration over or under valuation, ultimately for the good of the economy and the security of the nation,’’ he said.
He said that the celebration would underscore the need for all stakeholders to provide quality data.
Attah said that the quality and integrity of the data that any customs service would make available to its government depended on the level of the integrity and compliance by stakeholders.
He said that apart from revenue collection, suppression of smuggling, trade facilitation and border security; the Nigeria Customs also provided statistics for national planning.
Attah said that the Minister of Finance, Mrs  Kemi Adeosun, would be the guest speaker, adding that service chiefs, other dignitaries  and relevant stakeholders would also grace the occasion .
