Apparently desirous of wooing importers to buy into the new Customs duty benchmark and also make the clearing of goods at the ports faster, simpler and convenient, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Dikko Abdullahi Inde says that the Service will introduce incentive.
Specifically, he hinted that the special incentive is meant for importers who import cargoes into Nigeria five times within a given period without any discrepancy.

Speaking at a sensitization and town hall meeting between the Customs and importers in Lagos on Tuesday, the Comptroller General explained that henceforth, “any importer or agent who import into Nigeria five times within a given period, without any discrepancy shall henceforth enjoy fast track concession for all subsequent importations”.
According to Dikko, the only thing required from importers in order to benefit from the incentive is voluntary compliance in terms of honest and accurate declaration of imported goods as well the correct duties payable on them.
The Custom boss also announced the setting up a joint monitoring and compliance committee, comprising of Customs, licensed agents and the importers.
Speaking further, Dikko said that “the committee is to manage the new incentive system to encourage voluntary compliance on the part of importers and their agents”.
The composition of the committee is made up of five representatives from the Nigerian importers, three representatives from the customs licensed agents, the Zonal Coordinator Zone ‘A’ of customs, the Comptroller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) and two Area Controllers of Customs who will be nominated by the Comptroller General and a journalist.
The CG directed that all further complaints by importers should be directed to the committee and that Customs management will take it up from there.
