Workers in the  nation’s oil and gas sector have threatened to down tools in response to last Sunday’s attack on the Atlas Cove Jetty in Lagos and the unchecked serial attacks on oil workers across the Niger Delta. They accused the federal government of inability to checkmate the unbridled attacks.
The attack on the expansive oil jetty left five persons including a naval officer and a rating dead, leading to fear of a possible further attacks.
National president, Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Comrade Babatunde Oguns told journalists in Lokoja, Kogi state last week that oil workers could no longer put heir lives and that of their families on the line in the face of militant attacks. “As far as the workers in the oil and gas industry, I think we are tired of the incessant attacks and I think we have said it repeatedly that if the attacks continue,  we’ll have no choice other than to abandon the various locations and go back to our various homes because we cannot continue to risk our lives and that of our families. Enough is enough and we have said it times and times again that we cannot because of the income we are going to get risk our lives”, Oguns declared. According to him, the attacks in the oil rich Niger Delta has gone from agitation to criminality and that it would be very bad if government failed to address it urgenly.
