Tin Can Customs Rakes In N111.2bn, Targets Bigger Revenue Haul Under Anani

By Oluyinka Onigbinde

The Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated N111.2 billion in revenue in May 2026, a performance that the newly appointed Area Controller, Comptroller Joseph Anani, says the Command is determined to surpass through improved compliance, stakeholder engagement and enhanced operational efficiency.

Anani disclosed this on Wednesday during his maiden engagement with journalists at the Command headquarters in Lagos, where he outlined his vision for the Command and pledged to consolidate on existing gains in revenue generation and trade facilitation.

The Area Controller described the Command’s current performance as encouraging, noting that the positive revenue trajectory reflects the dedication of officers and men of the Command, improved compliance levels among stakeholders and ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service.

According to him, the Command will continue to build on the achievements recorded in recent months while striving to exceed previous milestones.

“I am pleased to inform you that the Command is currently performing commendably in the area of revenue generation. This positive trajectory is a reflection of the dedication of our officers, improved compliance levels and enhanced operational efficiency. We intend to consolidate on these gains and indeed strive to surpass previous achievements under the preceding administration,” he said.

Anani emphasized that compliance with the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 would remain central to the operations of the Command, stressing that officers would continue to enforce customs regulations firmly, fairly and professionally.

He also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to supporting the modernization agenda of the Nigeria Customs Service through the deployment of technology-driven solutions designed to improve cargo clearance processes, boost efficiency and facilitate legitimate trade.

The Customs boss noted that stakeholder engagement would remain a key pillar of his administration, describing collaboration with industry players as critical to achieving the Command’s mandate.

He particularly acknowledged the media as an important partner in Customs operations, saying journalists play a strategic role in shaping public understanding, promoting accountability and encouraging compliance within the port environment.

“This meeting marks an important step in our deliberate effort to build stronger bridges of understanding and cooperation between the Command and the media. Since assuming office, I have made it a priority to engage continuously with all critical stakeholders in the maritime sector, and the press remains one of the most vital components in that ecosystem,” he stated.

Anani assured journalists that they would be fully carried along in the activities, reforms, policies and achievements of the Command through timely dissemination of information and regular interactions.

As part of efforts to deepen the relationship between Customs and the media, he disclosed plans to organize structured training programmes, sensitization workshops and capacity-building initiatives for maritime journalists to enhance their understanding of Customs operations and policies.

While seeking the support of the media, the Area Controller urged journalists to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and responsible reporting, noting that accurate and balanced reportage is essential to sustaining public confidence and preventing misinformation.

To strengthen communication and information sharing, he directed the Public Relations Unit of the Command to maintain close engagement with media practitioners and ensure prompt attention to issues relating to press coverage of Customs activities.

Anani also expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for the confidence reposed in him through his appointment to head one of the nation’s most strategic Customs commands.

He commended the Comptroller-General’s leadership and reform initiatives aimed at repositioning the Nigeria Customs Service for greater efficiency, improved revenue generation and global competitiveness.

The Tin Can Island Port Command remains one of the country’s leading revenue-generating customs formations, and stakeholders are optimistic that the Command’s N111.2 billion revenue performance in May will provide a strong foundation for even higher collections in the months ahead under the new leadership.
