The palpable anxiety which has gripped the top echelon of the Nigeria Customs Service reverberated again yesterday following the release of a list of newly-elevated senior officers.
The promotion comes on the heels of last week’s shake-up in the Service, which saw the retirement of three Deputy Comptrollers General and the promotion of many Comptrollers to the rank of Assistant Comptrollers General.
Our correspondent confirmed yesterday that 28 of Deputy Comptrollers have been promoted to the post of Comptrollers.

The promotion comes on the heels of last week’s shake-up in the Service, which saw the retirement of three Deputy Comptrollers General and the promotion of many Comptrollers to the rank of Assistant Comptrollers General.
Our correspondent confirmed yesterday that 28 of Deputy Comptrollers have been promoted to the post of Comptrollers.
The promotion also fuelled anxiety of an impending redeployment of senior officers.
A ‘staff order’ which was made available to Shipping Position Daily yesterday in Lagos revealed that 14 of the newly-promoted officers are from the northern part of the country and the south respectively.
Further breakdown shows that seven are from the South west, while three are from the South eastern part of Nigeria.
From South south, we have two officers, while two are from the middle belt respectively.
Out of the 28 officers promoted to the post of comptrollers, four are females.
The North has: Gambo W. from Adamawa State, Aliyu M, from Jigawa state, Abubakar B. and Abass U. from Kaduna state, while Binga T.P. is from Taraba state.
Others are Dahiru A. M from Sokoto state, Usman S.M from Kebbi while the duo of Abba A.A and Gambo D.S hail from Katsina state.
The statement further revealed that four of the newly-promoted Comptrollers hail from Niger State.
They are: CheChe, K. M, Isah T. M (Mrs), Ndalati G.M and Mohammed S. N.
From the South west, there is: Olubiyi R.O (Mrs) from Oyo State, Adegoke F.F and Dada O.O from Osun state, while Azeez I.A hails from Ogun state.
From the middle belt: Burrommuyat N.P (Mrs) and Umaru D. (Mrs) are from Plateau state.
From the South south: Wanogho T. from Delta state and Eton E.E from Akwa Ibom state.
The three newly promoted Comptrollers from the eastern part of the country are: Egbunah O.E from Anambra state, Enwereuzor F.O Ebonyi state and Ukwuegbu from Imo state.
Our correspondent however confirmed yesterday that the recent promotion may also lead to the exit of some senior Comptrollers who were not beneficiaries of last week’s elevation of some of their contemporaries to the rank of Assistant Comptroller General (ACG).
It was also learnt that the promotion is already causing ripples as some deputy comptrollers who were seen as deserving of elevation were left out.
Also Shipping Position Daily gathered from various commands of the service in Lagos yesterday that officers from the below Assistant Controllers are now angry that they have been bypassed, even as some Assistant Controllers have remained un-promoted for years.
Our correspondent in a chat with some aggrieved officers (names withheld) gathered that apart from political appointments, senior officers are supposed to hold their positions for not more than four years, while junior officers are supposed to be there for three years.
"What is keeping the junior officers from being promoted? We cannot wait to wear our ranks" a source said.
Shipping Position Daily also gathered that about 4,000 officers from the rank of Assistant Comptroller General downwards to Assistant Controllers where due for promotion but only few out of the number where promoted, thereby leaving a huge amount still thirsty for promotion.
