Shipping Position Daily gathered that there is apprehension from the people over the development and they are worried over the number of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tank farms that liter the area.
Mr. Johnson Dike, a resident of Onne told our correspondent that the concerned authorities should do something to regulate the choice of site for building of oil tank farms in the area because ports users and residence of Onne are currently seating on gun powder.
Our visit to Onne reveals that the FOT axis which is behind the NPA office complex in Onne has more than 20 tank farms. This development, we gathered is not in line with Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policy.
A Safety consultant, Ken Ahaotu who confirmed the indiscriminate sitting of Tank Farms, said that there is no due process in the approvals of these Tank Farms.
Mr. Ahaotu therefore suggested the need to discourage companies from sitting petroleum product storage facilities indiscriminately in Onne in order to safeguard the lives of people, property and environment from possible disaster.
He also called on government and all the regulatory agencies to find ways of putting measures in place to check possible fire out break from the petroleum storage facilities in Onne.
