Barely 24 hours to the expiration of the ultimatum given by the Lagos State Government to all tankers, trailers and other articulated vehicles to vacate, there have been some level of compliance on the the Eko bridge, Ijora and Marine beach roads linking Wharf road yesterday.

Investigation by Shipping Position Daily revealed that the Apapa- Oshodi Expressway experienced the usual gridlock from Mile 2 bus stop down to Tin Can Island port.
Our correspondent who also sampled opinions of the truck drivers at Coconut area was told that it will be difficult for the vehicles to leave the area under 48 hours.

According to them, some of the vehicles have developed mechanical faults while waiting on the queue.
The Nigerian Association of Road transport Owners (NARTO) however attributed the lingering traffic to government‘s poor regulation on roads

But, NARTO through its General Manager, operations; Alhaji Tijjani Bataiya toldShipping Position Daily exclusively yesterday that there was a backlog of oil-laden vessels at the port, making it difficult for the tankers to get products out of the respective jetties.

He added that the persistence gridlock experienced at Mile 2,Coconut and Ibafon axis of the Apapa Oshodi expressway is based on the fact that most of the tankers are not on call up, stressing that some of drivers to take advantage of the gridlock to use the expressway as parking lot.

Speaking on the abrupt disappearance of the gridlock inward the Apapa port yesterday, the NARTO top man said that holding bay for the trucks should have been inculcated in the concessioning programme of the ports, stressing that the government failed to realise this.

The NARTO stalwart argued that Nigeria as an import-dependent nation should adhere strictly to policies that will boost transportation in country.

"Government failed to provide easy means for movement of cargoes coming out of the ports"
