Following the proposed move to ban cars importation from the land borders come January 2017,a customs broker, Mr. Joseph Atoloye has called on the Federal Government to put in place machinery that would ensure that the assembly of cars in Nigeria receive a boost.
Atoloye who is the Managing Director, Waltolye Limited informed Auto Port Weekly in Lagos, that since the ban on importation of vehicles through the land border would be implemented in January 2017,it was imperative for government to be aggressive in encouraging the various companies in the automotive sector manufacturing chain to start the process of cars assembly in thousands of units.
He also stated that the ban on vehicles from the land borders would boost revenue collection from the seaports and will make Nigerian importers to patronise the nation's seaports.
According to him, the National Assembly and the Federal Government should work harmoniously to make sure that made -in-Nigeria cars are manufactured.
Atoloye revealed that some manufacturing companies have commenced the process of self- generation of electricity, urging the vehicle manufacturers to also key into the scheme of power generation.
The customs broker who disclosed this recently during an award ceremony in Lagos stated that, "I think the Senate had called for the ban on vehicles importation to Nigeria before the customs announcement and with that directive in place we expect the federal government and NASS to work together and put in place measures that can encourage local manufacturing of cars in the country"
"This is the time for government to be patriotic to encourage manufacturers of vehicles in Nigeria considering the ban of cars from the land borders"
"We want a situation whereby cars that are made in Nigeria can be made available at a cheaper price for Nigerians"
The customs license broker however maintained that the ban on vehicles from land borders would further boost revenue of customs at the seaports, stressing the need for government to implement the proposed ban with determination.
Atoloye maintained that the policy was a welcome development that would move the maritime sector forward.
