The Centre For Marine Surveyors in Nigeria (CMSN) has said plans are on-going to mentor and train students in maritime-related studies at maritime institutions across the country.
President, CMSN, Prince Bambo Ademiluyi stated this last week in Lagos during a chat with Shipping Position Daily.
He explained that the Centre for Marine Surveyors Nigeria (CMSN) was borne out of the need to sanitise the profession and to provide a platform for self-regulation by surveyors.
According to him, the mission of the Centre is commitment to enhancing knowledge while providing and expanding opportunities for growth, it also to regulate professional marine surveying standards and practices.
Ademiluyi disclosed that about 100 students from College of Fisheries and Marine Technology have keyed- into the capacity building programme.
He said that there has been a large turnout of students from the College; they have filled the form in order for them to become student-members of the centre.
He said the recent career talk which the centre organised for students from the University of Lagos was an eye opener for the students in maritime courses.
Ademiluyi reiterated that the CMSN will also impact on students from engineering department of UNILAG, saying that it is an added advantage for them to become marine surveyors.
However, he affirmed that the Centre is contemplating to engage students from Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN),Oron as part of its mentorship and capacity building programme initiatives
Ademiluyi stressed that the Centre will also move the training and mentorship programme to Bell University, disclosing further that "this University programme will come up in October"
Speaking further on the career talk programme for students, the Centre’s frontman affirmed that such moves have been the major activities of the body in the last three months.
According to him, the focal point of the programme will centre on mentorship, excursion and lecture.
He noted that without exposing the students to practical and life at sea, the programme will never be complete.
"No matter what you teach the students in the classroom, there is need for them to understand the environment''
"The will go outside bar of Lagos waters and get a feel of the marine world and that is for the students"
"But for other members, the training will cut across surveyors and master mariners mostly in line with the code of practice", he noted.
He said the on-going exercise, which is to empower students is one of the biggest achievements of the Centre for 2016.
