Chinese investment is behind a US$10 billion project in Tanzania to create what has been billed by its backers as the ‘biggest port in Africa’.

Financed by the Export Import Bank of China (EXIM), the first phase of a deep-water port in Bagamoyo, 75 km south of Tanzania’s capital and port city of Dar es Salaam, could enter service in 2017.

It will be built to handle 20 million containers annually compared to current throughput of below one million teu at both Dar es Salaam and Mombasa, in nearby Kenya.

There are plans to also equip the port with ro-ro terminals and dry bulk and multi-purpose terminals.

China will also support infrastructure development with the connection of the new port to existing road and rail transport networks.
