China has reportedly begun trial operations at the Shanghai Yangshan Deep Water Port – the largest automated terminal in the world – according to The Washington Times.
The Port of Shanghai is already the World’s busiest port, and the addition of the new terminal will only cement that position by adding vast capacity and technological capability.
Chen Wuyuan, President of Shanghai International Port Group, told the Xinhua News Agency: “The automated terminal not only increases the port’s handling efficiency but also reduces carbon emissions by up to 10%.”
Shanghai Yangshan Deep Water Port will initially handle 4 million TEU – this will expand to around 6.3 million TEU, with the rollout of 26 bridge cranes and 120 rail-mounted gantry cranes.
