The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Bayelsa State Command, has declared the creeks of the state unsafe for those involved in illegal oil bunkering and refining activities.
The State Commandant, NSCDC, Mr. Desmond Agu, made the declaration yesterday during his monthly briefing of officers and men of the command.
He said the NSCDC, working in collaboration with other security agencies in the state, had this year successfully destroyed more than 142 illegal refineries in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
The commandant also revealed that over 17 cases of arrests in connection with the illicit act were in court, while more than 18 persons had been remanded.
He used warned those still perpetrating the act of pipeline vandalism, kidnapping and sea piracy to desist forthwith or be ready to face the full weight of the law.
He reassured the federal and state governments, Minister of Petroleum and that of Interior of the command’s commitment to put a stop to what he described as “economic sabotage” going on in the Niger Delta.
Agu mentioned lack of adequate logistics, gunboats and operational equipment as some of the challenges facing the command.
He warned officers and men against engaging in acts capable of tarnishing the image of the command and advised them to be committed to their duties.
“You must be security conscious and monitor the activities of the public, most especially at this period of insurgency. Do not intimidate and extort money from the public,” he warned.
The commandant also used the forum to honour three of his men for their dedication to duties in the third quarter of the year (May and July).
