Customs Arrests Four For Illegal Bunkering

The Customs Area Controller (CAC) in charge of Cross River/Akwa Ibom/Calabar Free Trade Zone command, Comptroller Hassan Mundu says that eagle-eyed personnel of the Service have arrested four persons for alleged bunkering activities
Mundu disclosed over the weekend that the culprits were arrested in connection with freighting of diesel that was cleverly concealed in three tankers. He gave the value of the petroleum products as N25 million and assured that the suspects would soon be handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.

Mundu disclosed over the weekend that the culprits were arrested in connection with freighting of diesel that was cleverly concealed in three tankers. He gave the value of the petroleum products as N25 million and assured that the suspects would soon be handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
According to him, the diesel that  were loaded into tankers with registration numbers XR611ABC, XZ866 EPE and XA 72 KDG were intercepted by officers of the command’s anti –smuggling arm.
He consequently warned those involved in illegal bunkering to desist from coming through his Area command, as the officers and men of the service will not condone any illegal activity or dealings of importation and exportation.
 Giving an insight into the command’s half year performances, the Customs boss said that the command recorded more than eight seizures of various contraband and prohibited goods with duty paid value (DPV) of about N20.3 million.
  “The Command in its bid to suppress and protect the country’s economy from unpatriotic Nigerians and economic saboteurs have made over eight seizures of various contraband and prohibited goods in the area with a total duty paid value of about N20.3 million from January-June 2012,” he said.
 “Before now, the average monthly revenue collection by Customs from the Free trade zone was between N2.8 million to N2.9 million but in the month of May and June this year, the revenue collection for the above mentioned areas rose to N7.95 million. The total revenue collection from the Area command from January- June 2012 rose to over 994.6 million.”
