The Oyo and Osun state Command of Nigeria Customs Service said it made a seizure of 2,446 bags of rice, valued at around N29m in the last two weeks.
Controller of the Command, Richard Oteri, told journalists in Ibadan on Wednesday that 23 vehicles were involved in the smuggling activities and that they were apprehended on Ilero-Otu road, Saki-Iseyin road and at Alaraba village.

Controller of the Command, Richard Oteri, told journalists in Ibadan on Wednesday that 23 vehicles were involved in the smuggling activities and that they were apprehended on Ilero-Otu road, Saki-Iseyin road and at Alaraba village.
He said, “in the face of challenging security situation in the country, the Nigeria Customs Service has stepped up its security function in the area of policing our border line in such a way that those who do not wish our nation well will not have their way.
“We have continued to record victory over economic saboteurs and in the last two weeks, this command made some seizures because of the vigilance of its men. A DAF truck with number plate XA 997 FKY loaded with 610 bags of rice was arrested while another Volvo truck with number plate KSF 731 XE was also caught with 298 bags of rice. In another intelligence operation, 21 fairly used vehicles were seized with 1,538 bags of rice. It is estimated that the bags of rice is worth around N29m.”
Oteri said the evasion of duty on the seized goods represented a huge loss to Nigeria, wondering why offenders refused to seek legitimate means of income despite the jail term attached to smuggling activities. He also thanked the leadership of customs in Nigeria for encouraging its men to perform at their best.
“The leadership style of the Comptroller General under Abdullahi Dikko, which places emphasis on reward for hard work, has continued to motivate field operatives to do more. This has resulted in the collection of N6.6billion revenue and assorted seizures in the second quarter of this year,” Oteri said.
