The Nigeria Institute of Shipping Eastern Zone last week held a one day workshop in Port Harcourt; with the improve professional efficiency of shipping practitioners.
The programme which has as its theme: “Emerging Trends in the shipping and logistics supply chain practice: Outsourcing and Procurement Strategies” attracted industry stakeholders within the shipping community in Port Harcourt.

The programme which has as its theme: “Emerging Trends in the shipping and logistics supply chain practice: Outsourcing and Procurement Strategies” attracted industry stakeholders within the shipping community in Port Harcourt.
Speaking at the occasion, Chairman of NIS Eastern Zone who doubles as the Programme Chairman, Mr. Ebetan Moses Akeodi said that Nigeria Institute of Shipping remains the foremost professional shipping training Institute in the country.
He said that NIS, which was established since 30th October 1983 has a target of advancing the art and science of shipping practice in Nigeria.
He also noted that NIS runs Professional Examination in May/June and Nov/Dec of every year, noting that so far that NIS has graduated more than 700 students since 1984 when the professional examination commenced.
He however applauded participants at the programme and urged shipping and logistics practitioners to take advantage of NIS programmes to enhance their professional competence in the shipping Industry.
In a keynote address presented during the occasion, the special Guest of Honour, who also is the Institute’s National President and Chairman of the Council, Mr. John Patrick Egesi, said that the workshop is aimed at creating a forum to further entrench the culture of public/private sector participation in the development of maritime activities in the country.
The National President of NIS, also commended the efforts of NIMASA Director General; Mr. Patrick Ziakade Akpobokemi for being an apostle of change in the maritime sector, saying he shares similar vision with Mr. President on the development of the shipping/ maritime sector of the Nigerian economy.
Speaking specifically on the topic: “emerging trends in the shipping/Logistics Supply chain Practice in Nigeria”, Mr Egesi noted that there have been some great improvements in hatch design, cargo handing gears and navigational aids in the sector.
While commending the workshop, he expressed hope that the conference has come to stay, as an annual re- examination and review of the industry.
Several other papers on critical issues relating to shipping/ maritime practice were also presented. Among them include Sir Ahuama Joshua who spoke on emerging trends in the shipping/logistics supply chain practice, Engr. Aikoroje Isaac Aruy, Rector Global Maritime Academy who spoke on “The Future of Trends in the shipping and Logistics supply while Mr. Dele Alabi presented the third workshop paper.
