Foremost shipping and maritime training institute; Emdee Shipping and Maritime College has conducted elections to usher in its first set of Association of Maritime Management Students (ASMAS) executives, who are to coordinate student activities for the next one year.

Shipping Position Daily correspondent who visited the college gathered that more than 72 students voted in the election, while 20 candidates contested for various positions in the elections.

At the end of the keenly contested election, Oyelami Olanrewaju emerged as the AMSA President defeating his opponent, Edeh Emmanuel by 81 votes as against the 52 votes that were scored by his opponent. Enwereji Hannah also emerged as Vice President unopposed.

Speaking with our correspondent, Oyelami Olanrewaju assured that he will make use of the position to make management know issues bordering on students’ welfare and to equally project the image of the college positively.

"I will serve them, because I believe there is power in responsibility, we will try to make management know what our issues are"

"I will make sure that everybody's voice is heard by the management, I will carry them along and ensure that whatever we want stands and management does not rule over us unnecessarily", he assured the students.

Olanrewaju reaffirmed the confidence of the students in Emdee Shipping and Maritime College, saying that they are comfortable with the lectures, he added that a lot of students have been introduced to go and undergo various safety courses immediately after their stay at the college.

According to him, this is the first student union forum by the College and it was borne out of demands for a body where the voices of all the students will be heard and the need for a body that will liaise with the school authorities.

Also speaking, Secretary of the association, Ekeoha Joy highlighted the importance of AMSA, saying that, "it is necessary because there might be a time that students will want to make their demands known to the school authorities and this has to be done in unity, just like it is obtainable in other higher institutions"

"I am very grateful to them and I thank them for voting me in and I promise them that I will represent them well before management", she also assured.

However, the electoral officer, Mr. Elua Prince said that the election process was free and fair and that everyone was made to exercise his or her franchise.

According to him, "this is the first time we are running this, and the school does not have any candidate at heart, it is a free and fair election where everyone was made to exercise their franchise

"This is a Monotechnic where we run basically shipping management courses, here it is a president of the association while in other higher institutions, they have several department al heads".

The other elected officers are: Gbadamosi Oluwaseyi as Assistant General Secretary, Nnamani Kingsley as Financial Secretary and Chukwuma Adaobi as Treasurer.

Others include; Onyeukwu Queen as Director of Social, Lawrence Wisdom as Director of Sports and Uyere Gift as Public Relations Officer.
