Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) last week reeled out its 2008 performance balance sheet confirming that said it collected a whopping N2.972 trillion, representing an increase of N1.131 trillion or 61.43 per cent over the preceding year’s figure of N1.841 trillion.
According to the agency’s chairman, Mrs Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru, FIRS has progressively improved on its yearly performances from a mere N1.194 trillion in 2004, to N1.172 trillion in 2005 and N1.863 trillion in 2006.
Omoigui-Okauru said at a function in Abuja that FIRS had “redefined the role of taxation in Nigeria as the cardinal for the nation’s economic health and has drawn national attention to the primacy of a functional tax system to drive sustainable development. “For five years running, collection has hit the trillion naira mark: N 1,194.8 trillion in 2004, N1,171.8 trillion in 2005, N1,863.2 trillion  in 2006, N1,840.9 trillion in 2007 and  N2.972 trillion in 2008,” she said.
Acknowledging the cooperation of Nigerians, she disclosed that there can not be at tax system without tax payers and that without tax payers, there can not be FIRS.
“Those who have been paying their taxes should continue to do so, those who have not been paying should start doing so now. Nigerians who pay their tax are patriots”, advised
