Five crew members of Indian-flagged LPG tanker Maharshi Krishnatreya have died in the compressor room while repairing a damaged pipe, The Asian Age reports that the accident occurred on Monday.
The vessel was en route to the UAE for dry docking and it was about 220 nautical miles off the coast of Mumbai when the gas leak and explosion happened, according to the Indian news portals .

Six crew members, comprising chief officer, gas engineer, bosun and three seamen were working in the compressor room when the incident occurred. The sixth crewmember sustained grave injuries.
It is not jet clear if the sailors died from the gas leak or the explosion. Indian Navy evacuated the injured sailor and provided assistance on the scene, a spokesperson for India’s defense department told reporters.
Reportedly the vessel has been diverted to Portbandar in Gujarat for investigation.
Varun Shipping owned vessel MV Maharshi Krishnatreya is an LPG carrier built by Hyundai Heavy Industries with capacity of 36,160 dwt.
