The Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Olugbenga Dairo, has described the Gateway International Airport (GIA) as a major milestone in the state’s transportation and economic development, following its recent commercial flight certification by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
Speaking to journalists in his office, Dairo revealed that the certification marked a significant step for the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration in its drive for industrialization and socio-economic growth.
“The journey began about three to four years ago with the construction, and now, all the major infrastructure required for a functional airport has been completed for the past few months,” he said. “We have the longest runway, independent backup power facilities for uninterrupted runway lighting, a fully equipped control tower, rescue and firefighting equipment, a terminal building, doppler VOR for precise navigation, and a cargo warehouse, among other facilities to support both domestic and international flights.”
He stressed that meeting NCAA’s certification requirements was rigorous, noting that the regulatory body has recently raised standards for airport operations, with a two- to three-year deadline for compliance across the country.
Dairo expressed pride that Ogun State’s Aerodrome operating permit stands out as the first of its kind in Nigeria. According to him, the next phase for the GIA is the commencement of full-scale operations for both passenger and cargo services.
“The Gateway International Airport will redefine air travel for residents, providing convenient and efficient services. This is a game-changer for our transport system,” he said.
The Commissioner further disclosed that Ogun State has a 25-year transportation master plan designed to integrate all transport systems. He noted that the plan is already being implemented through key interventions and projects aimed at ensuring a modern and sustainable transport network for the state’s growing population.
