In eagerness for the commencement of the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Gbaramatu youths under the aegis of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) have undertaken a two-day voluntary sanitation exercise to tidy up the campus premises in readiness for its take off.
The IYC said the gesture was an expression of the people's friendly, hospitable and accommodating disposition as host of the tertiary institution in readiness for its Immediate commencement.
According to a statement signed by the chairman of Gbaramatu youth wing of IYC, Godswill Doubra Wuruyai, the two day voluntary sanitation exercise from October 31- November 1, 2017 at the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko Campus, Kurutie, is to publicly express the feelings of the people over the presence of a higher institution in their community and their readiness to be a peaceful host.
"We use this medium to call on the Federal Government to release the #2billion alleged to have been approved for the commencement of the University as conveyed by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo, to the necessary authorities for them to galvanize its immediate take off.
"As peace loving youths of Gbaramatu Kingdom, we reiterate that we shall continue to promote and maintain a serene environment for the institute to thrive peacefully", the community youth leader assured.
Meanwhile, communities in Gbaramatu kingdom have appealed to the Federal Government to fast track resumption of academic activities in the university
The chairman of Kokodiagbene community, Gbaramatu Kingdom, Comrade Sheriff Mulade, who spoke on behalf of the Chairmen of Gbararmatu communities, said that the takeoff of the Maritime University had been delayed for too long.
He implored the Federal Government to fulfill its promise and do the needful and calm frayed nerves without further delay.
He expressed disappointment over the way and manner in which the Federal Government was handling the take-off of the university at Okerenkoko in spite of annoucement that N2 billion had been earmarked as take-off grant.
Comrade Mulade added that the people of the Niger Delta were losing trust and confidence in the Federal Government for not showing enough commitment to the promises it made to the people on the smooth take-off of the university.
While reiterating that Okerenkoko community remained the original land owner of the Nigerian Maritime University, he appealed to the government to expedite action on the take-off of the university.
