Workers of Hamadah Shipping Services Limited have have raised alarm over alleged  non-payment of their salary for one year, even as they alleged that the company’s Managing Director  has  absconded since the fortunes of the company declined.

Documents made available to Shipping Position Daily by some of the aggrieved workers revealed that due to the financial position of the company, the management has also advised workers to look elsewhere.

The workers are however calling for the removal of the managing director due to what they called his attitude towards the plight of the workers.

The workers however exonerated the Board chairman; Alhaji Bala Shagari , saying he  is unaware of their ordeal.

The workers also singled out a director in the company, Alhaji Abdu Dantata and the Managing Director; Sir Titus Okonkwo as the major causes of the non-payment of their salaries for one year.

One of the workers (name withheld) accused Abdu Dantata of holding the workers to ransom, saying that Bala Shagari is finding it difficult to summon the MD about the matter.

But the Managing Director of the company Sir Titus Okonkwo in a chat with our correspondent via the telephone explained that the company has been on partial operation since 2012 due to the unfavourable policy of the federal government on importation.

He also debunked allegations by the aggrieved workers, saying that the last salary was paid in October 2014.

Okonkwo stated that the company handles cargoes like sugar, rice and cement, but lamented that since the current government policy is affecting the company, he advised the workers to look elsewhere.

He added "that personally, I am not happy about the situation myself, but there is nothing to be done about it”.
