Hapag-Lloyd, the fifth biggest container shipping line in the world by market share, has placed a record order for 13,420 refrigerated containers, known as reefers, which are set for delivery in November 2019.
According to a statement, 12,450 of the containers will be 40-feet while the reaming 970 will be 20-feet.
They will primarily carry fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, cherries and avocados from Chile, Peru and elsewhere, but it will also carry fish and meat.
“With this new order, we will be expanding our transport capacities for our customers, explains Niklas Ohling, Senior Director Container Steering, Hapag-Lloyd.

“They will now have at their disposal over 100,000 state-of-the-art refrigerated containers with a total capacity of 210,000 TEU, some of which will be equipped with the latest Controlled Atmosphere technology, which slows the ripening process during transport, thereby extending the shelf life of fruit and vegetables.”
PTI reported in August 2018 how Hapag-Lloyd planned to increase its reefer fleet to 100,000 TEU when it ordered 11,100 state-of-the-art reefers, all of which were due for delivery by December that year.
In June 2019 it launched ‘Hapag-Lloyd LIVE’, a real-time, customized supply chain monitoring system as part of its efforts to deliver enhanced logistics transparency, which will be initially rolled-out in its reefers before it becomes available throughout its fleet of containers.
