The Tin Can Island Command of Nigeria Customs Service has promised to collaborate with members of the International Freight Forwarder Association (IFFA) to provide conducive working environment, building the human capacity of the freight forwarders as well as centralize cargo alerts emanating from the command.
Customs Area Controller of Tin Can Customs stated this during a meeting with IFFA Tin Can chapter Chairman, Ojo Akintoye, IFFA national president, Dr. Sam Onyemelukwe and other members of IFFA national and chapter executives.
The Customs boss at the meeting promised that the command is ready to yield its state of the art training facility for the purposes of training the IFFA members. He charged them to write to him on the topic they are about to discuss and he is ready to impact more knowledge.
"In capacity building, there is need for you to update yourself from time to time; it is by attending these programmes that we can bring to bare all the global best practices. People do not need to flood the port with human contact before they can take delivery of their cargoes, you can be in the comfort of your office and take delivery"
Also speaking, Tin Can Island Chapter Chairman of IFFA, Ojo Akintoye lamented the multiple alerts emanating from Tin Can Island chapter on already cleared consignments.
Presently, he said that the major alerts constituting delay to freight forwarder is CIU alert, Valuation alert and CPC alert.
He advised that all these alerts could be handled by one single person at the command without requiring for freight forwarder to move from table to table.
"We are not saying that there should not be alerts, but we are looking at the area whereby valuation alerts, CPC alerts and CIU alerts can be addressed by one person instead of going from one table to another; we want it to be addressed by one person", he stated.
On his part, National President of IFFA, Dr. Sam Onyemelukwe said the essence of the working visit was to rub mind with customs because they are the people facilitating trade mostly at the port.
"From time to time, it is good for the stakeholders to synergise because no man is an island, all the problems militating against Nigeria being a maritime hub in the sub region would only be addressed when we come together", he said.
Healso assured the Customs boss that the association is always at the forefront of global best practice in our day to day activities. He took time to introduce the Tin Can Port executives of IFFA led by Ojo Akintoye to the Customs Controller, seeking greater collaboration for the excos.
