Men of the Lagos State Task Force on Environment yesterday pursued a commercial motorcycle rider (popularly called okada) to his death for allegedly riding his motorcycle within the Apapa, in contravention of the new Lagos traffic law.

Shipping Position Daily correspondent who was at the scene reported that a unit of the task force personnel pushed the rider and the ‘okada’ who was in motion under a moving container-laden truck, the truck crushed the ‘okada’ rider instantly.
For fear of a reprisal attack by colleagues of the deceased rider, who immediately mobilized other riders, the police officers quickly shot tear gas in the air to scare the riders who had gathered at the scene. The policemen took the corpse and sped away in their van.
Meanwhile, family and friends of the deceased rider told our correspondent that his wife had just been delivered of a set of twins and that he was a well- known rider around the axis.
Since the passage of the Lagos traffic laws about three months ago, the Lagos task force in charge of ridding the port and Apapa of unwanted elements has been apprehending commercial motorcycle riders on all the roads in Apapa.
The Chairman of Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) Chief Remi Ogungbemi was also sighted at the scene trying to control the traffic that had built up as a result of the incident; he however said he was not present when it happened.
