Cooking gas is far better even though I am not using it, if you use gas it will reduce the cost of the kerosene because less people will demand for it and thereby making it more available for the aviation industry, Apart from this, using gas makes your kitchen very clean. The start up cost of the gas is not that high contrary to beliefs, the cost of buying a stove and so on in the case of kerosene should also be considered. As for the risk, carefulness and caution is the watch word as well as handling with care, as dangerous as fuel is, we all use it in our houses on daily basis, so also in the use of gas, we must be very careful and don’t allow children to have access to it, always close after use and to ensure that the kitchen area is highly ventilated, the degree of carefulness is what matters most. Kerosene itself is also dangerous; there have been reports of explosion when the same tank is used to carry fuel and kerosene.

It is better to use kerosene even at the high cost we are experiencing right now, the maintenance cost for gas is relatively high and the risk involved is also high compared to kerosene. The truth is that no matter what we say that gas is cheaper for now, I think kerosene is still the ultimate because for most Nigerians who are not used to gas, its usage might lead to another thing entirely, such as disaster in the country. We will only pray for the country so that those that are involved in the hoarding of these petroleum products should realise that the country is blessed with all abundant natural resources and it should not be a problem to the common man.

I believe that if the product is available the risk will be less because people will begin to be educated about it, and if we begin to talk about the hazards of using gas, kerosene also explodes every now and then, so if gas is made available the enlightenment will be there.

Kerosene is better than the gas even though the two are useful, without the diesel and fuel we all know that nobody will be able to move, so likewise with the kerosene because it is not everybody that can afford to buy cooking gas or electric stove, without the kerosene some poor people will not see food at all. So, both are useful, it’s just left for government to know how to tackle the issue of kerosene scarcity. We know that one of the disadvantages of kerosene is that it brings dirt, but gas can destroy everything in the house in 10 minutes, the kerosene also explodes but it will be very difficult, if kerosene explodes then you should know probably the tanker used in bringing it in has been used for petrol. Even if government should make gas available everywhere at lower prices, some people will continue to use kerosene; even some landlords do not allow anybody to use gas in their house.

Truly gas should be an alternative, because right now as I speak to you, in my house, we use both kerosene and gas, but with the high cost of kerosene, we have decided to compare both; in terms of duration and we found out that gas is more durable. Kerosene is easier to operate; even the younger ones can operate a kerosene stove and cook, but gas is not what the children can just operate. For gas the hazard is indeed high but there is a way out to use it successfully after all, there are so many people who have been using gas from the onset and nothing has occurred in terms of accident or disaster. Truly gas should be in use in this country because the advantage is much; it makes the kitchen neater, the utensils, pots and everything that is associated with the kitchen. Kerosene on its part also has its own hazards; especially and even with kerosene there are still disasters. So usage of gas should be encouraged. Cooking with kerosene also takes time compare to gas cooker which does not take much time. In terms of cost, for now kerosene is higher. Initially gas was more expensive, but now even the poor can afford gas, apart from the cylinder, which is costly at the initial stage; after that every other thing is cheap. I think it is high we all embraced gas.

Gas is preferable because it is faster and cleaner as well as economical; all that the government has to do is to ensure that instead of flaring gas in the country, we can harness it for domestic purpose, if we continue to flare gas it can lead to acid rain that kills people. Gas is economical than the kerosene because you consume more kerosene within the short space of time that your gas last, minus the additional cost of buying cleansing powder every now and then just to clean your kitchen and make your pots clean, meanwhile gas does not have all these problems, it saves you a lot of wastes. But generally, I believe we should all continue to use what we are comfortable with, because it is different strokes for different folks.

Kerosene is very important to Nigerians and the situation on ground cannot be overemphasized, Most of the marketers in this business transport this product to other West African countries and beyond to sell at a higher rate in order to make more profit compare to what is obtainable in Nigeria. In Benin Republic, they are ready to buy kerosene at N200 per litre, but in Nigeria we cannot because we know it is commonly sold here at a much lesser price so most marketers look for alternative to make more profit by going to neighbouring countries to sell. That is why it is now expensive. Life, we all know is all about risk the tanker driver with the highly flammable content he carries from one location to another is in a risk so also the cook in the kitchen, therefore gas and kerosene are dangerous, but we should carry on with what we are used to and for me kerosene is what is best, apart from that we should all contribute our own quota to fight those that also hoard this commodities.

I just bought a gas cooker because of the high cost of kerosene right now. The matter on ground now is that everything in life involves risk, so I am of the opinion that it is high time we changed our mind set because we are all getting wiser by the day. For me, gas should be encouraged as a means of cooking. I noticed I now spend less with the gas compared to kerosene. Let us forget about the risk involved because such risk is applicable to kerosene and I can say kerosene is even expensive now compared to the gas. Why spend more when you know that you can save cost using the gas cookers.
