The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has charged the Federal government to patronize the nation’s textile industry in the procurement of official uniforms for Nigeria forces like the Nigerian Police Force, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Army, and Nigerian Air Force amongst others.
The president of the association, Engineer Mansur Ahmed, said this in recent chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos.
He encouraged the government to ensure that they patronize made in Nigeria textiles to boost the sector.
“You recall that a couple of years ago the president a presidential order 003 which is supposed to be, first ensure that government itself is using made in Nigeria products. Now this is of course an ongoing thing there are areas for instance textiles, the government consumes a lot of textiles particularly through the uniform agencies like Customs, police, Army, Air force and the while range of them”
“If we take the bold step to start using Nigeria material for their uniforms that would have a tremendous impact in the textile industry”, he said.
Mansur reiterated the need for the nation to have a local market for what it produces.
He however said that the association is working with the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) and through other fora in engaging the government to put policies in place to ensure all these.
“So we have various for a particularly in the industrial council through the PEBEC and many other foras in which we engage the government to try and push the policy that would help in this respect”
“For instance, the CBN is now bringing an initiative that will boost the capacity of the textile sector in particular through the provision of financing the various means of the value chain, from the cutting growers and the textile amongst others. So there are lots of efforts going on to promote the use of made in Nigeria goods but we are not satisfied, we know that much can be done” he concluded.
