The Nigeria Customs Service has been commended for putting together a two-day human capacity development programme for maritime journalists as part of efforts aimed at making the journalists to understand modern trends in the cargo clearing procedures.
The two days training programme which held last week in Lagos had no fewer than 70 reporters from various media houses covering the beat.

The initiative by Apapa Area 1 Command of the service was highly lauded by both the old and young writers, even as the print and electronic media took turn to show appreciation.
Speaking at the end of the training programme , President of Maritime Correspondent Organisation of Nigeria,(MARCON), Mr. Ismail Aniemu said that, "this is the best gift we have received from the Nigeria Customs Service, the training is not only unique but it also made the command to be more outstanding than any other command".
Aniemu who is also the editor of "The Journal" further affirmed that, " I feel richer than I came and as journalists, we play the role of a teacher and you cannot teach when you are ignorant"
Ismail Aniemu added: "I want to applaud the Area Controller and members of the management team for coming up with this novel ideas and I think it is worthy of applause, I am going to cherish the certificate or souvenir that I will get from the training because I am better than I was reporting the customs" .
In his remarks, the editor-in-chief of "Maritime Voice Newspaper" and a member of League of Maritime Editors; Mazi Tony Ohakwe said that it is a life-time opportunity for reporters to broaden their knowledge on modern customs procedures, adding that it will enhance further knowledge of the 21st century Nigeria Customs Service.
Ohakwe stressed that, "I will go back and impact on the trading community and I will use it as an assessment base, because if you teach me, it is expected of me to do same to the community".
Speaking on behalf of the electronic media and correspondents, Mr Ademola Adeoye of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) lauded the effort of the command and the Nigeria Customs Service for the training, because according to him, "when you have proper knowledge of a subject you will be able to relate better with the stakeholders".
According to him, the training programme has changed the scope and understanding of the reporters.
Also speaking, a member, Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN); Mr Enyeribe Anyanwu lauded the service for the capacity building programme, noting that it will go a long way in the life of the journalists.
Meanwhile, highpoint of the programme was the presentation of certificate of participation by the Customs Area Controller; Comptroller Charles Edike to all the journalists present at the training.
Some of the courses treated include: integrity, success and challenges of PAAR, Enforcement, CEMA , Documentation and ASYCUDA, General Import Procedure Basic.
Others are: General Import Procedure, 3+, Stakeholders Relationship Customs and Media, Modern Customs and Inter Personal Skill
