MSC has taken delivery of the Ultra Large Container Vessel, the “MSC TESSA,” at the Changxing Shipbuilding Base in Shanghai. The vessel is estimated to have cost MSC $600 million.

The manufacturer claims that MSC TESSA is the world’s largest containership, with a capacity rating of 24,116 TEU. These vessels can stack boxes up to 25 layers high. It can carry more than 240,000 tons of cargo and load 24,116 standard-sized containers at a time.

The MSC TESSA was built by the Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard, which is a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) in Shanghai. The ship is 1,312 feet long, with a beam of around 202 feet. It has been classified with the DNV classification society.

This ship is the first of a class of 14 vessels. When all these ships are delivered, MSC will have a total capacity of 1.7 million TEUs.

The MSC TESSA will depart on its first journey on March 16th from Ningbo with stops in Shanghai and Yantian. The vessel will also call on Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Felixstowe before finally proceeding to Singapore.

Hudong Zhonghua highlighted several energy-saving features that were a part of the new vessel. The vessels and others in its class have energy-saving features such as a bulbous bow, a hybrid scrubber, large-diameter propellers, and energy-saving ducts. These MSC ships are also the first in the company’s fleet to employ an air lubrication system. The shipyard officials estimated that these measures will provide around 3 to 4% in energy savings, meaning a reduction in 6,000 tons of CO2 per year.
