…Says No Casuals in Eastern Ports
The vice president of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Eastern zone, comrade Joseph Odomene, has said that currently there are no casual workers at the ports.
The statement was made recently in Port Harcourt while he was inaugurating the newly elected executives of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), haulage unit. Odomene at the ceremony cautioned the new executives that they are an affiliate of the MWUN and as such should always take direction from higher authorities.
After pledging complete support for the incoming team, he warned them against activities such as carrying out strike actions as well as making unwarranted financial demands from management. He also warned the team against initiating, undertaking and concluding negotiations with management without approval from the supervising body.
Speaking on behalf of the new executive, the secretary general of the unit comrade Robert Akpan, traced the history of the haulage union saying that the Nigeria Union of Haulage Workers as it was originally known few years back has been operating illegally until it was registered.
