The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), led by Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, has announced its participation in the Nigeria Labour Congress’ (NLC) 2-Day nationwide protest scheduled for February 27th and 28th, 2024.

This decision according to a press statement issued by the head of media MWUN; Kennedy Ikemefuna, comes in response to the directive issued by the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) during its meeting held on February 26th in Abuja.

The union stated that the protest aims to address the Federal government’s failure to honour the agreement signed on October 2nd, 2023, between the government and the Congress. The agreement, if implemented, was expected to alleviate the hardships caused by various policies affecting Nigerian workers and citizens.

Adeyanju stated that the union fully supports the NLC’s decision and will adhere to its directive. He said MWUN views the protest as a necessary step to hold the government accountable for its commitments to the welfare of workers and the populace.

He added that the decision to participate underscores MWUN’s commitment to advocating for the rights and interests of maritime workers and the broader Nigerian labour force.

Adeyanju further emphasized the importance of unity among labour unions in addressing common challenges and ensuring that workers’ voices are heard at the national level.

The nationwide protest is expected to draw participation from various labour unions and civil society groups across Nigeria.
