The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has intensified efforts to entrench a performance-based culture within the agency, hosting a Performance Management System (PMS) workshop for its Directors, Deputy Directors and Heads of Units in Lagos.
The initiative comes on the heels of the recent signing of a Performance Bond between Directors, Heads of Units and the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of NSC, Dr. Akutah Pius, during the Council’s Special Management Retreat. The bond was introduced to align departmental goals with the broader policy direction of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.
Declaring the workshop open, the Director of Human Resources Management, Mr. Ahmed Garta, said the PMS framework was central to the Council’s reform drive, stressing that efficiency and accountability must become the hallmark of service delivery. He urged participants to engage the training with seriousness and to translate the lessons into measurable results.
The lead facilitator, Prof. Adeyemi Ajayi, walked participants through global best practices in performance management, noting that the programme would not only sharpen staff capacity but also drive tangible improvements in institutional performance.
The NSC explained that the PMS initiative is designed to cascade performance targets down to all levels of staff, ensuring every cadre is accountable for set deliverables. The move, it said, reflects its commitment to repositioning as a more efficient economic regulator in the nation’s maritime sector.
According to the Council, the ongoing reforms represent a deliberate shift towards a results-driven culture, where service quality, staff productivity and institutional efficiency are no longer aspirational goals but measurable outcomes.
