The President General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Tony Nted Emmanuel has condemned the rising cases of kndnap and othe rviolnet crimes in Andoni in Rivers state , even as he requested for the unconditional release of a 70-year old fisherman; Pa Opada Timothy Agbalekama, who was abducted by kidnappers in Andoni since March 12, 2015.
Comrade Emmanuel made the call in a chart with newsmen in Port Harcourt last week. He described the abduction of the 70 years old fisherman in Andoni as barbaric, wicked and a disgrace on the people of Andoni.
Comrade Tony Nted, who is from Andoni said he found it difficult to comprehend why his people are targets of violence and kidnap in recent times.
‘’The case of Opada Timothy Agbalekama is just one out of a lot. It’s unfortunate that many bad things are happening in Andoni. When it happens in other places, leaders and chiefs stand up to address the challenges’’, Comrade Tony Nted stated angrily.
He said only last year, kidnappers took his own mother , resulting in unplanned expenditure. ‘’Again an innocent 70 –year old fisherman – Opada Timothy Agbalekama is taken captive since March 2015, and nobody is asking question. This is unfair’’.
He confirmed his love for Andoni people and expressed desire to contribute to the development of the town. ‘’ That is why I bring my philanthropic activities to Andoni to see how to help my people. That I support projects does not mean I have money; that should not warrant unchecked kidnap/violence attacks on my people’’, Tony Nted stated.
“I am not a politician. I love my people and that is why I go extra mile to attract the development projects. It’s a personal effort to reduce the suffering of my people’’, Comrade Nted said in an emotion – laden tone.
He equally tasked the Andoni Elders and Chiefs to rise to the occasion to tackle the menace of violent crimes, such as: piracy, robbery, rape, kidnap and other crimes being perpetuated in Andoni.
‘’Since this last kidnap case in Andoni in the month of March, no Chief in Andoni has called meeting to discuss how to calm the raging insecurity engulfing Andoni communities’’ he queried.
The union leader also appealed to the Ijaw Youth Council to step into the matter of violent crimes in Andoni, so as to find lasting solutions to it. ‘’God is watching those involved in these violent crimes against Andoni citizens. Those doing this should stop now or get ready to pay the bitter price for their wickedness against humanity’’
‘’ This madness of violent crimes against Andoni people must stop now’’, he warned.
