The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) says it will champion the course to tackle the challenges of Nigerian seafarers.
The President-General of MWUN, Mr Francis Bunu, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.
The statement was issued by the Head of Media, Mr John Kennedy Ikemefuna, to commemorate the Day of the Seafarer 2025.
The Day of the Seafarers is celebrated every June 25.
The year 2025 campaign is: ‘My Harassment-Free Ship’, a bold initiative to promote a culture of respect and zero tolerance for bullying and harassment at sea.
Bunu said the union would champion the seafarer’s course, especially regarding their welfare and obtaining necessary sailing documents through the Nigerian Maritime Safety Agency.
According to him, the sailing and enhancement documents have been one of the major hindrances of the seafarers in the country.
“Most of the turned out Cadets from the Maritime Academy in Oron do not have the necessary documentations for sailing on major vessels in the country,” he said.
He promised to engage with key stakeholders in the maritime sector to address and achieve the documentation objective.
He expressed concern on the deplorable conditions of the Nigerian seafarers and the inadequately equipped training institutions in the country.
Bunu said that cadets turned out from the institutions roam all over the places unengaged, for lack of vessels to cater for their profession.
